Norma Daughtrey's Obituary
Norma was born into this world on March 3, 1919 to Raymond Eugene Stites and Anna Beatrice (Walls) Stites in Dean, Iowa. She joined a brother Ronald George Stites three years older. Her parents divorced when she was three and they both would remarry and start families with their new spouses.Anna Stites married Henry Stevens and had twin boys, Dale and Doyle, a daughter Eloise and son, Tom. Raymond Stites married Gail Foster on October 25, 1924 and they began their family with having 5 children, Mable Corder, Raymond Stites, Jr., Vivian Manning, Jennie Lee Grimm and a baby boy that passed at 3 months of age.Norma began her teaching career in a one room school house at the young age of 16, teaching grades K-12. She taught in many towns before teaching in Moulton, where she taught most of her 30 years. In 1941, she married, Glen McCullough. They never had children of their own but Glen brought to this family a son, Lloyd McCullough. She continued teaching throughout the years, teaching many children. She primarily taught kindergarten by choice, in her own words, 'Every child can be taught with the right foundation, discipline and love that might be missing in their lives'. She finished her bachelor degree and because of her love of reading and teaching young children, she took a writing correspondence course by mail in the early 70's. After writing several children's stories in hopes to have one published, it finally happened, one book was published and she was paid $12.00. Norma and Glen enjoyed their lives, fishing, pheasant hunting and camping. They enjoyed taking their camper to Bennett Springs State Park. In the 35 years they were married, they were happy and lived life as they wanted, together. Norma took a leave from teaching when Glen became very ill. There could be nothing but admiration for her devotion and strength. She took care of Glen at home, on their farm, for as long as she was able. Glen passed in 1975, and as she once wrote, 'She had lost the love of her life'.She remained on their farm and began breeding dogs, Yorkshire Terriers and Cocker Spaniels, and on occasion, an accidental litter of German Sheppard's. In 1981 Norma married Donald Daughtrey of Centerville, Iowa and together they moved to Florida. She brought her 'baby' Nanette, unbeknownst to the family at the time, poodles would become endearing to her and a constant companion. Because of her God given talent having a green thumb she surrounded their yard with many flowers and a beautiful, well kept lawn. She filled her home with her collection of porcelain dolls and her always multiplying collection of 'Kewpie Dolls'. In 1999 Norma sold her home and moved to Kissimmee, Florida in her own place. She brought with her 2 very much loved (and spoiled) poodles, Rusty and Nicky. They were her companions and 'Babbies. She would now live closer to Dorothy, Julie and Ronda. Norma had no boundaries with whom she loved and considered family.
