Nona Beth Lane's Obituary
Nona Beth Lane, age 94 of Centerville, Iowa passed away, Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at the Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.
She was born on February 20, 1922 in Worthington, Minnesota, the daughter of Leone and Maude (Calvin) Proper. In her early childhood years, Nona was raised by her maternal grandmother in Superior, Wisconsin, as well as Duluth, Minnesota.
At the age of sixteen she made the decision to move to Worthington, Minnesota to live with her father and step-mother. Nona graduated from high school in Worthington.
Following high school graduation, Nona received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After a brief period as a teacher at a one-room schoolhouse in Tama, Iowa, Nona made the decision to enlist in the United States Navy.
Nona served her country honorably as a Navy Wave World War II veteran.
In her younger adult years, she was united in marriage to John Spiegel and to this union of marriage, four children were born, Wanda, Douglas, Linda, and Sharon. The couple later divorced. In 1998 Nona was united in marriage to George Lane. George preceded her in death.
Nona had various jobs throughout her lifetime. Her favorite was working in the sewing and notions departments at several retail stores.
She enjoyed many hobbies in life, including sewing, playing cards, and traveling.
She is survived by her three children, Sharon (Terry) Hershberger of Melrose, Iowa, Linda Burgess of Overland Park, Kansas, and Douglas (Karen) Spiegel of Papillion, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Nona was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Wanda Kaufmann; her first husband, John Spiegel; her second husband, George Lane; and a grandson, Douglas Michael Spiegel.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Centerville 18-80 Club and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com. Lange Funeral Home in Centerville has been entrusted with caring for the family.
