Miss Wilma Sophia West Obituary's Obituary
Wilma Sophia West, third child and daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Orth West was born near Thayer, Kansas, Neosho County on February 23, 1914 and deceased November 22,2013 at the age of 99 years, 9 months, and 30 days. Wilma attended the Thayer Elementary School until 1925 when the family moved to Benton Township, Wayne County near Corydon, Iowa. She graduated from Corydon High School in 1932. Her professional career involved over 44 years of teaching; beginning in Wayne County Rural Schools, to Millerton Middle Grades, Corydon Elementary, Iowa Falls Blanche Stoddard Elementary, and to Rogers School in Marshalltown, Iowa. Her educational training was earned form Iowa State Teachers College, Iowa State University, and N.E. Missouri State Teachers College, having earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education. In 1974 her name was placed in the national directory of 'OUTSTANDING ELEMENTARY TEACHERS OF AMERICA.' Wilma became a member of the Corydon Methodist Church in 1928, although from early childhood she had attended the Methodist Church in Thayer, Kansas. She was a life member of both national and state teachers' associations, and a life member of Wayne County Historical Society and Museum, where she worked as a volunteer librarian for many years. Preceding her in death besides her parents were half brothers: Clarence and Luther Edward Thurman, half sister Mrs. D.A. (Minnie) Ball, an infant brother, sister Mrs. Harold (Hanna J. Mae) Davis, brother-in-law Harold Davis, brother Thomas Sheldon West, sister-in-law Hilma West, nephew Dr. Durwood Davis, nieces Doris McCabe and Betty Schmidt. Survivors are her beloved nephews Rollin Ball (Ethel Mae) Ball, Ron Schmidt and nieces Elizabeth West (Leland) Perkins, Connie West (Ron) Argo, Melody Davis and a host of great nieces and nephews as well as many friends.
