Mirie Huston's Obituary
Mirie Clara Frances (Mayner) Huston, 72, of Exline passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Mirie was born in Denver, Colorado on October 7, 1942 to Dr. Frank & Viola (Parker) Mayner. She attended school in Quincy, Illinois and Montrose, Iowa. Mirie was the Montrose Watermelon Festival Queen in 1960. During her teens and throughout some of her adult life Mirie showed horses. She also was a cheerleader in high school and college. Mirie attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. While at Iowa Wesleyan, she met Stan Huston and the couple were married on August 27, 1961. She would attend Simpson College in 1961 & 1962. After her time at Simpson, she spent the next 30 years as a stay at home dance, gymnastics, little league, 4-H taxi mom and groomer of horses. Mirie was a devoted mother and wife to her family. She was leader of the True Blue 4-H Club in Exline for many years. She also led the Appanoose County 4-H horse and dog project for 25 years. Teaching kids to show their horses and dogs in a proper fashion was one of the loves of her life. She was an excellent rider herself and won pleasure classes at the Kansas City Royal and Madison Square Garden as a teen. After the kids were raised, Mirie went back to school at Truman State University and Buena Vista College to obtain her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She was a long term substitute teacher for Centerville Community Schools and enjoyed every day she was able to work. Mirie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Stan Huston of Exline, two children: Dr. Kelly Huston (Harold) of Sandy, Utah, Dr. Butch Huston (Dr. Angie Sidler) of Andover, Minnesota, seven grandchildren: Kelsey, Tyler, Josh, Sage, Ernie, Julie and Jacob. She was preceded in death by her daughter Heather, brother, Dr. Alfred Mayner, sister, Sue, nephew Donald Mayner, and a granddaughter, Carolina. Mirie's body was cremated and no services are planned at this time. Memorials may be given to the family, a scholarship in Mirie's name will be established.
