Mildred I. Adamson's Obituary
Mildred Isabell (Marshall) Adamson, age 95 Centerville, Iowa, was born October 16, 1918, at Dean, Iowa, and died September 19, 2014 at Centerville Nursing and Rehab in Centerville, Iowa. She was the oldest of five children born to Vern and Alma (Hansen) Marshall. The family had a dairy west of Centerville and she was required to milk cows before going to school. As the oldest child she was to set the example for her siblings. Mildred graduated from Centerville High School in 1936 with a certificate in Normal Training and began teaching in rural schools. Her first job required a walk of five miles, but often a neighbor would give her a ride. Her teaching days were ended when she married. Married ladies were disqualified as teachers.She married Glenn Rex Adamson on May 10, 1939 in Unionville, Missouri. Five children were born to this union. Mildred considered herself an ordinary housewife and mother. She set the standard for her children. She read classic stories to them. The children were not to bring home any low grades; they were to "keep at it" until they got it. And they never got into the habit of swearing as soap doesn't taste that good. She would say "when times were hard the only way I could see we were making any progress was the fact the children were getting taller." She described her life, "When Dad was out wheeling and dealing in the junk yard, I was in the house praying." Mildred made a decision to follow Christ at the age of twelve and faithfully attended church from then on. Her ministry touched many lives. She taught Sunday school and Bible school classes. Every lesson was geared to the specific age. From tiny tots to retired women each one enjoyed the lessons she prepared. As a member of the Ladies Missionary Group she encouraged missionaries with her letters. Her caring letters reached out to some missionaries for more than 40 years. She is remembered for her faithful witness of her savior and her prayers for her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, three infant grandchildren, Michael Ripperger, Joshua Calab Holton, Maya Grace Harvey and Rick Johanson, grandson in-law. She is survived by her children: Janet and husband Jim Ripperger of Chariton, Iowa; Norman Adamson and wife Sharon of Boone, Iowa; Peggy McCarty of West Valley, Utah; Pat and husband Bill McAfee of Centerville, Iowa; and Nancy and husband Dan Bennett of Centerville, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren; brother Vance Marshall of Flint, Michigan, sister Lois Cridlebaugh of Centerville, Iowa. Her faithful prayers and Birthday cards will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Brian Hargrave and Rev. Adam Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at the South Lawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 from 9 am until 1 pm and the family will be present from 11 am until the time of services at the church.Memorials may be given to the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church and may be left or mailed to the funeral home.
