Merilyn Middlebrook's Obituary
SARAH MERILYN MIDDLEBROOK Sarah Merilyn Middlebrook was born June 11, 1930, to Leonard & Ida Esther Garton Roe at Innwood, Iowa. She died on June 27, 2010, in Corydon, Iowa. Merilyn's mother died when she was only seven, and much of her younger years were spent living with various aunts and uncles while her dad was working on construction. She was out on her own at a young age, but when visiting in Corydon, she met F. Mertin Middlebrook. They were married May 18, 1947, and to this union two sons were born: Dennis Mertin and Randy Derrin. Mertin and Merilyn joined Mertin's parents in the family business and from there developed businesses of their own. Merilyn was a very hard worker. She worked alongside Mertin in their grain business. Her job was to manage the books, which she did without the benefit of a computer. Merilyn also managed the Dairy Sweet, and had many customers, even from out-of-area, stopping by for a special treat. Many times she would accompany Mert on the tank wagon, enjoying visiting with their many customers. Merilyn also joined Mert in their semi truck as they crossed the country. Merilyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved everything about making a good home for her family. She was an excellent cook, an avid gardener, and will always be remembered for her beautiful holiday table settings and decorations. Their favorite hobby was dancing. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a Cub Scout den mother when her sons were young. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 68, Methodist Church circles, Republican Women's Club, and Eden Garden Club. She especially enjoyed decorating the tables for her committee meetings using flowers from her own garden. Merilyn accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Corydon United Methodist Church in October 1970. Merilyn was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dirl; sister, Marjorie Piercy; husband, F. Mertin Middlebrook; and granddaughter, Staci Lynn. She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons, Dennis (Kay) Middlebrook, and Randy (Sherry) Middlebrook; her grandchildren, Michael (Mendy) Middlebrook; Carla (Shane) Housley; Jennifer (David) Szlanfucht; and Ashlee Middlebrook and fianc, Bruce Bishop.
