Max Hiatt's Obituary
Max Hiatt, 92, of Centerville passed away, Saturday December 16, 2017 at Homestead in Centerville. Max was born to R.C. & Nelle (Underwood) Hiatt on February 14, 1925 in Moravia. Max received his education from Centerville Schools, graduating in 1943. Max was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II. After the service, Max was united in marriage to Betty McConville on July 7, 1947 in Centerville at St. Mary's Church. To this union came five children: Jeanne, Marti, Chuck, Steve and Pat. Max was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Max was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan. In his early years, Max coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. He led teams to state championships and Midwest regionals. Four of his teams were undefeated. In his later years, Max enjoyed shooting guns at the range, golfing and hunting. Max was a very competitive man. He had high standards for those who kept company with him. Whether it was coaching, hunting or golfing; Max wanted to be the best. Survivors include his children: Jeanne Jacobson, Marti Mefferd (Jim), Chuck Hiatt (Becky), Steve Hiatt (Diane), Pat Hiatt (Michelle), 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 63 years, Betty Hiatt on May 10, 2010, grandson, Travis O'Toole, brother, Jack Hiatt and son-in-law, Jake Jacobson. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 21, 2017 at St. Mary's Church with Fr. Bill Hubmann CPPS officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will take place Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 p.m. A scripture service will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to the Appanoose County Little League and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
