Mary Bernita Hiatt Kelley's Obituary
Mary Bernita Hiatt Kelley, age 89 of Centerville, died October 2, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with family by her side after an 8 month stay at Golden Age Care Center.
She was born on a farm near Mystic on November 18, 1931 to Howard and Franchon (Beaty) Teater.
As a young child, she loved attending country schools and graduated from high school from Moravia in 1949. After high school she moved to Newton, then Davenport, and back to Centerville to live out the rest of her life. In January 1950, she married Elmer Hiatt and in December, they welcomed their only son Gary. Elmer passed in January 1970. She was then united in marriage to JB Kelly in 1974. JB died in April 2012.
Marys favorite passion was fashion and shopping. She was known to be seen around town visiting her favorite local stores. She loved to travel and talked often of her many vacations, especially cruises. She enjoyed going on several trips with her friends from the Shriners group. She loved the Christmas holiday season with Gary and family, as well as her siblings and their families. After her and JB were married, she would spend Christmas Eve with JBs son Mike, his wife Patty, and their families. Mary taught Sunday school at the Dale Church for many years. She was currently a member of the first Baptist Church in Centerville where she enjoyed teaching Bible school. While in high school, she was baptized in the Chariton River east of Centerville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer Hiatt and husband JB Kelley, two brothers, Ray Teater and Verl Teater, and sister Carletta Knapp.
Mary is survived by her son Gary Hiatt and his wife Debbie of Centerville, three grandchildren; Marti Williams (Andy Luttrell) of Omaha, Nebraska, Courtney Hawkins of Centerville, Iowa, and Ryan Hiatt (Angela) of Bondurant, Iowa, four great-grandchildren, Delaney Faulder (Brett) of Lincoln Nebraska, Avery Hawkins of Centerville, Conner Hiatt and Hattie Hiatt of Bondurant, and one great-great granddaughter, Kennedy Faulder of Lincoln, NE.
Due to Covid 19 exposure within the family, service times have changed to a public graveside service at 10:30AM, Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Haines Cemetery north of Centerville with Pastor Howard Luscan officiating. A Celebration of Marys life will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be left to the family of Mary Hiatt Kelley, to be determined at a later date, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, C/O Kelley family, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
