Mary Johnson's Obituary
Mary Johnson, age 73 of Promise City passed away on October 18, 2018 at her home. Mary Elizabeth Shallenberger Johnson was born to Carl and Mildred (Hampshire) Shallenberger (Beard) on February 12, 1945 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. Mary attended school in Connellsville, Pennsylvania and graduated from Connellsville Joint Senior High School in 1963. She was united in marriage to Jerry Johnson on January 19, 1963. To this union four children were born. Mary was employed at a dress shop in Doylestown, PA for several years. She and Jerry moved to California in 1979 where she was a cabinet maker at Yorktown Cabinets. They then moved to Iowa in 1992 where they retired and became hobby crafters. Mary loved planning and attending craft shows, going to the casinos and spending time with family and friends. She taught us that it's okay to be yourself, to always see the good in everything no matter how hard or bad it was, nothing has an expiration date, giving is much more important than receiving, there is never a wrong time for a joke or to make someone laugh and most importantly she taught us to never settle for less than the best. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Jerry who passed away in November of 2017, her Father Carl F. Shallenberger, Mother Mildred M. (Hampshire) Shallenberger (Beard), and step- father Arthur Beard, her in-laws Sarah Johnson (Malinski), and father-in law, Clark Johnson, Mother-in law Sarah Johnson (Malensky), and Step-father-in law Rudy Malensky, brothers Charles Henry Shallenberger, and Earl Shallenberger, sisters Ruth Carol Shallenberger (Easter), Patricia A Shallenberger(Katona), grandson Christopher Pople and son-in-law Eddie Valiquette. Brother and sister in laws, Clark, Richard, Wade, Tony, Judy, Bonnie, Ida, Alma. Survivors include her children; Jeanie Johnson, Carol Johnson Valiquette, Jerry Johnson Jr. (Nicole), Rhonda Johnson (Brian Palmer), adopted daughter Mia Terrell (Dave), grandchildren; Shonda Johnson (Chris Furlin), Michele Thompson Sims (Chris), Dusty Valiquette, John Rockwood Jr. (Samantha), Jeared Johnson (Joni), Deana Johnson, Phoenix Johnson, JJ Johnson and seven great grandchildren, sister Verna Shallenberger (Moreira), brother Terrance C. Shallenberger (Norm), many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow in the Promise City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon.
