Mary Ann Hartness' Obituary
Mary Ann Hartness of Centerville, Iowa died Wednesday, August 6, 2014. She was born November 15, 1923 to Concetta and Carlo LaPaglia in Centerville, Iowa.
After graduating from Centerville High School, Mary Ann worked in bookkeeping and office administration. She worked for Iowa Southern Utilities for 13 years and spent her free time dancing, golfing and traveling with friends and family.
She married Howard Hartness and embarked on a second career as a homemaker and volunteer for numerous community and charitable organizations.
Mary Ann was an active lifetime member of St. Joseph-Mercy Hospital Auxiliary for 46 years. She earned her 20,000 hour pin for volunteer service recognition. She served as chairman of several committees and held several officer positions including President and Vice President of the auxiliary. She was always willing to do her part and was proud to be an active member of the hospital auxiliary.
She loved and supported music and was active in Centerville High School Band Mothers and the Centerville Concert Association.
Mary Ann was a Brownies and Girl Scout Leader and volunteered at Saint Mary's School. She participated as an active volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program and various other charitable organizations and fund raisers.
Mary Ann was a member of Appanoose Country Club, an auxiliary member of the Elks Club and life long member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church of Centerville.
Mary Ann won several Dance contests. In high school she was quoted as saying that she would rather dance than eat. She and her husband Howard spent hours dancing to Big Band music. However, Mary Ann loved to dance to all types of music.
Besides Dancing, Mary Ann loved playing Golf, Bridge and Traveling.
Surviving are her daughter, Rita and a brother Joe. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother and four sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 PM Thursday, August 14, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Mike Volkmer officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the family present from 10:30 AM until service time. A Rosary will begin at 11:30 AM on Thursday. A private burial will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com. Lange Funeral Home and Crematory has been entrusted with caring for the Hartness Family.
