Mary Helen DeVore's Obituary
Mary Helen DeVore, age 84 of Plano, Iowa passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Centerville Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born to Chester and Irene (Sash) Ervin on February 9, 1930 in Laurel, Iowa. Mary Helen graduated from Laurel High School in 1948. She married Dale DeVore in Conrad, Iowa on November 15, 1953. To this union of marriage four children were born, Dennis, Donald, Doug and Brian. In her early years, Mary Helen worked for Fuller's Grocery in Laurel. She later worked for Montgomery Ward in Marshalltown.
Mary Helen was a homemaker from the time of her marriage up until 1970. During this period of time she cared for her husband, four children, and in-laws. She also worked outdoors on the family farm, butchering nearly three hundred chickens during the summer, also preparing nightly dinners for a large, extended family.
She went to work for Neely's Manufacturing in 1970. Mary Helen was employed with the company for thirty six years, retiring in 2006. It should be noted that while employed with Neely's, Mary Helen tended to a large vegetable garden, half an acre in size. She would work long hours during the day, followed by an extensive period of time working in her garden in the evening.
Mary Helen and Dale were longtime members of the Promise City Methodist Church.
Left to honor her memory, her husband of sixty one years, Dale DeVore of Plano, Iowa; four children, Donald (Denise) DeVore of Carlisle, Iowa, Dennis (Chris) DeVore of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Doug (Marlene) DeVore of Princeton, Missouri and Brian (Tena) DeVore of Norwalk, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Ervin of Des Moines, Rosa Ervin of Des Moines, Cheryl (Ken) Weible of Des Moines; three nephews, Jim (Darla) Cherney of Montana, Kenny (Becky) Weible of Des Moines and Chris (Kassandra) Weible of Des Moines; and two nieces, Kathy (Ronnie) Payne of Wyoming and Nancy (Kevin) George of Des Moines; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.
Mary Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Judy Pauline Ervin and Minnie Cherney; and a brother, Elmer Lee Ervin.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Joan Ervin officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Jones Cemetery near Plano, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Saturday at the funeral home from 1-2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been established to Care Initiatives and may be given to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
