Martha Michael's Obituary
MARTHA LOUISE DUNSHEE MICHAEL Martha was born on July 12, 1913, to the family of Frank and Lillie Florence (McCollough) Dunshee in Chariton, Iowa. Martha was the second of nine children born to this union. She passed away in Corydon, Iowa, on January 27, 2011, at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 15 days. She graduated from the Chariton High School in 1932. In her early years she worked at several businesses in the Chariton area, including the Chariton Phone Company, J.C. Penney, and also assisted in the family's funeral business. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chariton at a young age. Martha was united in marriage to Roland Paul Michael, on November 23, 1938. To this union three children were born. They resided in Millerton, Iowa, and Osawatomie, Kansas, for a brief period of time before settling in Corydon in 1942. Martha joined the First Christian Church in Corydon shortly after being married. She served the church in various capacities throughout her life and was the church's financial secretary for 25 years. In September of 1957, Martha began working for the Corydon School District as a cook. After receiving certification as a dietician from Iowa State University, she assumed the duties of school dietician. She remained in employment of the school district until her retirement in May of 1976. She took great pride in planning and preparing nutritional, well balanced, and great tasting meals for the students of the Corydon, Cambria-Corydon, and Wayne Community School Districts. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Michael; her parents, Frank and Florence Dunshee; four brothers (Glen, Richard, William and Carl); two sisters (Marion and Maxine); and an infant grandson, John Paul Michael. She is survived by her three children, Larry (Joan) Michael, Chariton, Marilyn (David) Goughnour, Corydon, and Robert Michael, Corydon. She has six grandchildren, Tammy Marcusson, Corydon; Tim (Ronda) Michael, Chariton, Tod (Vonda) Michael, Chariton, Thad (Heather) Michael, Chariton, Gabrielle (Rick) Eaton, West Des Moines; and Anne (Michael) Alberhasky, Iowa City. Eight great-grandchildren survive Martha; Lauren Marcusson, Mercedes, Harli, Tristen, Cheyenne, and Karcyn Michael, Auden Eaton and Olivia Alberhasky. Martha is also survived by two sisters, Barbara Green and Frances Sampson, one sister-in-law Wreatha Dunshee, and numerous nieces and nephews.
