Marietta Lord's Obituary
Marietta Jane Lord, 94 of Corydon passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Corydon Specialty Care. Marietta was born on November 21, 1922 in rural Wayne County, IA to James and Almeda Bear. She had three brothers; Kermit, Allen, and Dean. She attended grade school at Little Flock School and attended high school at Promise City and graduated in the Class of 1940. She was baptized and a member of the Little Flock Baptist Church in Appanoose County. After graduation, Marietta worked in Des Moines and was married there to Eudean Lord on January 25, 1943 when he was home on leave. They moved to Highland, New Jersey where Eudean was stationed in the Coast Guard at Sandy Hook. They lived there until moving back to the Lord family farm near Promise City, IA in 1945. They were blessed with two children, Anita and Gary. They celebrated 73 years of marriage. Marietta was active in the Promise City Methodist Church. She played the piano and organ and taught Sunday School for 60 years. She began showing her artistic talent by starting a cake baking business in 1960. Many people in southern Iowa enjoyed her birthday, anniversary and wedding cakes. In 1970 she started taking art classes at Indian Hills Jr. College in Centerville. She joined a group of painters from Corydon and painted many Wayne County rural landscapes and barns. Some of her paintings were entered in regional art shows. She also took art lessons in Mesa, AZ, where she and Eudean spent many winters. She belonged to the Iowa Artists Organization. Marietta was very interested in genealogy and spent many hours working on family history. She was a member of Wayne County Genealogy Society and also the Wayne County Historical Society. She also enjoyed playing the piano and doing counted cross stitch. Marietta and Eudean were partners in the Ski-Vu Roller Rink from 1956 to 1973. They enjoyed traveling and visited all of the states except for Alaska and Hawaii. They were Parade Marshals in the Promise City Fun Days Parde in 2001. They also attended all of the Promise City High School Alumni reunions and enjoyed going to Rathbun Country Music. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter DM of Seymour. In 2009 she and Eudean sold the family farm and moved to Corydon, IA, where they attended the Corydon United Methodist Church. They lived at Elgin Apartments for 3 years then moved to Murphy Place, and recently Marietta was a resident at Corydon Specialty Care. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Eudean, brothers Kermit, Allen and Dean and grandson Brian Lord. She is survived by daughter Anita and husband Bill of Corydon and son Gary and wife Kathy of Tucson, AZ, three grandchildren, Andrea Martin (Eric) of Marion, IA; Ryan Wells (Susan) of Amherst, MA; and Scott Lord of Tucson, AZ, and five great grandchildren; Cole Martin, Trey Martin, Alexa Martin, Miguel Wells and Lewis Wells. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will follow the service at Promise City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service from 10-11:00 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Memorials may be directed to Corydon United Methodist Church or Prairie Trails Museum of Wayne County.
