Margaret (Peggy) Young's Obituary
Margaret (Peggy) Young, 97, passed away Saturday, September 28th in Long Term Care at MercyOne Centerville Medical Center.
She was born Winnibel Margaret Thomas on March 30, 1927, to Margaret (Chalberg) Thomas and Benjamin Thomas in Evanston, IL. Affectionately called Peggy, she was raised on Thayer Street in Evanston and enjoyed living in the Chicago area while growing up. She graduated from Evanston Township High School and attended Northwestern University in Evanston where she met her future husband John Bradley Young of Centerville, IA.
On May 31, 1949, they were married and moved to Centerville where her husband joined the family-owned banking business. They were blessed with two sons, John Bradley, Jr. and Jeffrey Thomas.
Peggy, like many in her generation was a stay-at-home mother and became involved with local service clubs and was a supreme hostess to her friends. She was an active member of PEO Chapter KA, Tri-T and a lifelong member of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.Her husband was an accomplished and avid golfer and Peggy soon took up his love for the game; becoming a champion in her own right. She was a four-time women's champion and eleven-time women's runner up champion at the Appanoose County Country Club. Between she and her husband, the Young's won club championships in five consecutive decades with their victories spanning almost half a century.
She and her husband were blessed to spend almost forty years retired at their second home at John's Island in Vero Beach, FL where they continued enjoying golf and where Peggy became an accomplished and serious bridge player. During that time, she enjoyed traveling and playing golf at the most prestigious courses all over the country, culminating with St. Andrews in Scotland.
Throughout her life Peggy was a gracious, sophisticated, generous and strong woman. She was a loving mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She created special times and experiences with and for her grandchildren. Throughout their lives, her younger brother and sister always considered Peggy their hero and in recent years as a model for navigating the aging process with strength and determination.
She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, stepmother, niece, sister-in-law and nephew. She is survived by her sons, Brad (Christi) Young of West Des Moines, Jeff (Ann) Young of Centerville. Grandchildren Tyler (Andrea) Young of Nashville, TN and Nicholas Young of Overland Park, KS. Her sister, Marilyn (Tom) Adams of Glencoe, IL, her brother Ben Thomas of Avon, CT, her nephews Ross Adams and David Adams and their children.
She received loving care and friendship from all the nurses, aides and support staff and their daily efforts on her behalf will never be forgotten.
According to her wishes, cremation has been accorded. A public visitation will take place Friday, October 25, 2024 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville with the family greeting friends from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Private family graveside services will be held following the visitation. The family designated a memorial to MercyOne Long Term Care, where Peggy lived the past four years.
