Margaret Hawk's Obituary
Margaret Hawk, age 92 of Plano, Iowa passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center, Long Term Care, Centerville, Iowa.
Margaret was born near Cincinnati, Iowa July 26, 1921 to Matthew and Olah Martin Followwill. The family later moved to Centerville where Margaret attended school and graduated with the Class of 1938. After graduation she worked for the telephone company in Centerville as a switchboard operator.
On September 8, 1940 she married Harold L. Hawk at the Methodist Church in Centerville. They lived on the family farm northeast of Moravia until 1962 when they moved to Goodyear, Arizona due to Harold's health. They resided there until 1999 when they moved to a retirement community in Youngstown, Arizona. They enjoyed nearly 64 years together, before Harold's passing in March of 2004.
The city girl adapted to the country and all that went with being a farmer's wife. Margaret excelled at making noodles, brownies and countless batches of candy and cookies at Christmas time. Her brother would come close to fisticuffs over who would get the most peanut butter fudge.
After moving to Arizona, Margaret furthered her education and became a Title I Reading Aide for the Avondale, AZ school district. She was a member of the Avondale Community Methodist Church and then the Youngstown Methodist Church. Margaret returned to her native Iowa in July of 2011, residing and enjoying her stay at the Continental St. Joseph's until her recent move to Long Term Care.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Zelma Whitacre and Carol Broshar; brothers Neal, Dorwin Lowell, Winfred (Pep) and Milton Lee (Pete); a granddaughter Kimberly O'Conner, and a great grandson Skye O'Conner.
She is survived by three daughters Jeanne (Ronald) Robertson of rural Plano, Joanne (Robert) Garnett of Gettysburg, PA, and Colleen Hawk of Peoria, AZ; nine grandchildren Scott (Susan) O'Conner, Margaret Garnet, Olivia Garnett, Thomas (Erin) Garnett, Katherine Garnet, Emily (Ben) Unglesbee, Diane Garnet, Kjersten Teeter and Martin Teeter; four great grandchildren, three great grandchildren; also a sister Pat Cooper of Bakersfield, CA; sisters-in-law Boneta, Pearlie, Velma and Jeanette Followwill. Brothers in law Floyd Broshar, Ken Cooper and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be announced later. Cremation has been accorded as per her wishes. A memorial has been established to HCI (Formerly Hospice of Central Iowa) and may be left or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home & Crematory. Condolences may be left at www.langefh.com.
