Marcia Kadel's Obituary
Marcia Mildred Kadel, age 97, died peacefully Friday, March 12, 2018, at Westhills Village, Rapid City, South Dakota. Marcia was born January 10, 1921, at home near Martinsburg, Iowa. She was the daughter of Ralph W. and Lulu Hawk Higgins. Marcia was raised on the family farm, attended elementary country school where she was the only student in her class, graduated from Sigourney High School , attended Normal Training and taught in country schools for a few years. On August 14, 1942, Marcia married Kenneth Kadel. She traveled with Kenneth during his military service during WWII. Following the war, they lived for a short time in Texarkana, Arkansas before moving home to Iowa. Marcia worked with Kenneth in their Super Value grocery stores in Sigourney and Centerville. After selling the Sigourney store in 1955, they moved to Centerville to manage that store with Kenneth's brother, Floyd, which was sold in 1957. Marcia stayed at home with the children, Sandra K. Hoover and Roger K. Kadel. In 1964, Marcia returned to work at the Gibson Discount Center in Centerville where Kenneth was the manager. They worked together until Gibson's moved to their new location in 1974. Marcia and Kenneth traveled the continental United States until Kenneth's death in 1986. Marcia continued traveling abroad for many years including accompanying her granddaughter to Italy. Marcia moved to Rapid City in 1988 to Westhills Retirement Village. She was very active until the last few years in various community activities including White Shrine, Order of Eastern Star (a Past Matron of the Centerville, Iowa Chapter and was over a 50 year member), AARP, Black Hills Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary, and Westhills volunteers. Marcia was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents; and her sister, Maxine. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Hoover (Robert, Rapid City, SD); her son, Roger (Sheryl, Davenport, IA); four grandchildren (Todd Hoover, Diana Kaufman, John Schulz and Linda Guthrie) and ten great grandchildren (Caleb, Gabe and Eli Hoover; Rowan, Elin and Isla Kaufman ; Joseph Schulz; Mitchell Franks; and Michael and Airrika Guthrie). Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Hedrick United Methodist Church in Hedrick, Iowa. Interment will immediately follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Martinsburg.
