Lola J. Moffatt's Obituary
Lola Jewel (Purvis) Moffatt, age 87 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Friday morning, June 8, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.
She was born November 13, 1924 in Honea Path, South Carolina, the daughter of John Floyd and Willie Leeonie (Thomas) Ashley. Lola Jewel was baptized in the Tensas River near New Light, Louisiana.
Lola is survived by her children, Earleen Purvis of Mystic, Iowa, Earl (Paula) Purvis of Marshalltown, Iowa, Frances (Ed) Woodliff of Lapeer, Michigan, Elaine (Larry) Abel of Riceville, Iowa, Jerry Purvis of Moravia, Iowa, Shirley (Bob) Kimberling of Greeley, Colorado, Terry (Debbie) Purvis of Gifford, Iowa, and Charlotte (Dennie) Fenton of Moulton, Iowa; step-children, Kathy Sewell and Edward (Sherry) Moffatt of Texas, 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Lola Jewel was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, husband Lee Moffatt, brothers Walter Ashley, Floyd Ashley, Louis Ashley, Eudell Ashley, sister, Sallie (Ashley) Brown and granddaughter, Constance Elaine Spiegeler.
She was employed with Union Carbide in Centerville, Iowa until retirement, was a member of the Women's Legion Auxillary of Unionville, Iowa, and active in 4-H group leader activities and quilting clubs in Louisiana.
Lola Jewell lived her life in South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana and Iowa. Throughout her lifetime, she loved to sew clothing for her children, cook, can fruits and vegetables, quilt, collect dolls, tapped maple trees and made syrup, and was an avid gardener for over 70 years. Lola Jewel loved birds, cats, dogs, raised peacocks and was very fond of horses. She has lived on farms most of her life and raised and tended to all types of farm animals. As a native of the deep South, Lola Jewel hoed and picked cotton to help make a living for her family. Being of Cherokee Indian heritage, Lola Jewel enjoyed making a living from the land, and loved and enjoyed all that nature provided in beauty, hunting wild game and serenity. Funeral services will be held 10 AM Tuesday morning, June 12, 2012 at the Lange Funeral Home & Crematory, Centerville with Terry Chapman officiating.
