Lillian Ilene Frizzell's Obituary
Lillian Ilene Constant Frizzell, 95, passed away June 19, 2023 at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe, MO after a hard-fought battle with pneumonia.
She was born August 14, 1927 at Hawarden, IA, the daughter of James H. and Ada Ruth Fitzpatrick Constant. On August 27, 1949 she married Charles Leon Frizzell in Kansas City, MO. Four children were born to this union: Donald, Thomas, Judy, and Jane. They were married for 50 years until Charlie's death in 1999.
Lillian was raised on a farm north of Chillicothe. When she completed 8th grade, she wanted so badly to continue her education, so she left the farm and came to Chillicothe. For the next four years she babysat for local families, worked as a waitress at the Walnut Inn, and sewed gloves at the Boss Glove Factory in addition to attending classes. She graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1946. After high school graduation, she went to Kansas City to work as a bookkeeper for Trans World Airlines.
Charlie had begun his teaching career at the Missouri School for the Deaf, so after they married, she also went to work at the school as a bookkeeper. As Charlie continued his career in education, he decided to move into administration. This led the family to move to Iowa and included stops in Fontanelle, Sewal, Van Meter, and finally, Corydon.
After their first child was born, Lillian became a stay-at-home mom for several years. Lillian always loved to learn, so when the opportunity arose to continue her education, she enthusiastically enrolled at Centerville Community College in 1969. She went on to get her Associate's Degree from there and continued on to Graceland College, earning her Bachelor's Degree in 1974.
Lillian had a passion for working with young people, so she began her career as a teacher librarian at Southeast Warren Community Schools, then later moved to Seymour Community Schools. She retired from teaching in 1989.
Lillian loved to read, sew, play cards, and attend music events. She was a great cook, and her family has many fond memories of shared family meals and just hanging out in the kitchen with her.
Lillian was a member of the Corydon United Methodist Church. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. For several years, she served as the president of the board for the Corydon Senior Center.
She and Charlie enjoyed traveling. They took the family on a number of memorable camping adventures, and after retirement, they took many trips around the U.S. in conjunction with Charlie's work with the Indian Hills Community College Board of Trustees. Many visits were made to spend time with their grandchildren. They also spent winters in Texas enjoying the warm weather, card games, and music jams and festivals.
Most of all, Lillian loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She treasured the time she got to spend with her sisters, brothers, in-laws, and nieces and nephews. Getting to spend time together sitting around and telling stories were some of the happiest times of her life.
