Leta Jane Guthrie Obituary's Obituary
Leta Jane Dyer Guthrie, daughter of Ira and Pearl Chapman Dyer, was born on December 19, 1932 in Wayne County Iowa. She passed away on June 5, 2012 at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. Leta was one of ten children: Beulah, Evah, Lena, Floy, Coy, Lova, Opal, Donna and twins Leta and Lyle. They grew up at Bethlehem, Iowa and attended country school. Leta graduated from Corydon High School in 1951. She met Junior Guthrie at a Fourth of July celebration in Chariton while riding the Tilt-A-Whirl. Leta and Junior were married March 6, 1952 and lived in Ohio for a short time until 'Uncle Sam' reached out for Junior. Before leaving for the Army, Junior moved Leta back to Wayne County where they remained. They enjoyed farming, gardening, playing cards and coyote hunting as they continued to whirl through 59 years together. Leta and Junior were blessed with one son: Ronnie Neal on February 27, 1955. Leta's pride and joy was her grandson, Brad who was born the day before her own birthday and they always shared a special relationship and celebrated their birthdays together (often at the Pizza Hut, Leta's favorite restaurant). Her other special relationship was with her twin brother, Lyle. They were best of friends and shared things together even though they were miles apart. Leta's love of animals was shared with her pet dogs, Sandy, Spunky and Skipper and her horse, Dolly, who she had for 24 years. She also had a fondness for calico cats, angels, flowers and anything red, white and blue. She was a Nascar fan with Kevin Harvick (#29) being the best and enjoyed rivalries with family members who liked other drivers. After her battle with cancer in 2000, she found her faith and joined the Corydon Assembly of God Church. Leta beat the cancer and was in full remission. Dr. Loren Brown called her his miracle patient. When the lung disease attacked her, Ronnie and Cheryl moved their camper into the driveway at Leta's and gave her continuous care until the end. Brad and Kerri and the girls were also there at a moment's notice. Best friend Kay Trimble came in every day to help with her Meals-On Wheels and anything else that needed done as well as sister-in-law Johnita Dresser, niece Pauline Cortesio, niece Jean Ann and John Woods and friend Pauline Couchman. She was a strong supporter of the Corydon Fire Department of which Ronnie and Brad are members. Leta was preceded in death by her husband, Junior, her parents, step-father Tom Reynolds, sisters Beulah Grismore, Evah Monteith, Lena Mattly, Floy Buttz and Opal Vesey and brother Coy Dyer. She is survived by her son Ronnie and wife Cheryl, grandson Brad and wife Kerri, step-grandson Brian Sloan and wife Angie all of Corydon and step-grandson Chad Sloan of Des Moines, step great grandchildren R.B. and Chelsea Sloan and Rylee, Karley and Natalie Mart, sisters: Lova Stewart of West Burlington and Donna Gookin of Chariton, brother Lyle Dyer of Las Vegas as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Memorials in Leta's memory may be given to the Corydon Assembly of God Church or the Wayne County Hospital.
