Leona Hellyer's Obituary
Leona Hellyer, age 96, of Centerville, Iowa, died Monday, November 5, 2007 at her home in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Adelson and Marie Josephine (Queval) Dufrasne on November 26, 1910 in Brazel, Iowa. She graduated from the Mystic Community School in 1928, and was a member of the basketball team that competed at the State Tournament. Leona received a teaching certificate in 1939 Des Moines, Iowa.On February 20, 1941, Leona was united in marriage to Thomas Hellyer in Clinton, Iowa. She was a school teacher for a time and later worked for over 52 years as a store clerk at various stores in Rockford, Illinois. She loved to play bridge and watch basketball. She was a member of the Brooke Road Methodist Church in Rockford, Illinois.She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Thomas Hellyer on March 24, 1977 and a son, Mickey Hellyer on June 19, 1990; and a sister, Lea Walker.Leona was survived by: her nieces, Shirley Luksan of Golden Valley, Minnesota, RoseMary Porter of Centerville, Iowa, Dorothy Walker of Phoenix, Arizona, Judy Hinkley of Plano, Texas, Patsy Morrow of Centerville, Iowa, Nancy Marienau of Geneseo, Illinois and Janice Weber of Centerville, Iowa; nephews, Leslie Walker of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Darl Walker of Phoenix, Arizona.Memorial services are Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 7 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Larry Bettis officiating. Burial of her ashes will be at a later date in Rockford, Illinois. The family will be present on Wednesday from 6:00 pm till the time of services at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to Drake Avenue Christian Church and may be left at the funeral home.
