Leon D. Kauzlarich's Obituary
Leon David Kauzlarich, 88 of Centerville passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 at Centerville Nursing & Rehab. Leon was born to Fred & Anna S. (Cowles) Kauzlarich on August 9, 1925 in Diamond, Iowa. He received his education from Centerville High School graduating in 1944. Leon served his country in the United States Army Signal Corp during World War II. On September 1, 1951 Leon was united in marriage to Barbara Ellen Ducey. To this union were three children; David, Mollee and Lori. Leon was a farmer his entire life and loved working with land. He raised livestock and crops for 65 years until his health would no longer allow him to be active on the farm. He was a 60 year member of the Mystic Christian Church until it closed. Leon gave back to his community. He was a 50 year District Soil Conservation Commissioner for Appanoose County, a member of the Appanoose County Fair Board, Centerville School Board, FHA Board, an inaugural member of the Resources Conservation & Development Board (RC&D), Appanoose Historical Society and the Mystic American Legion Post #340 Paul Dixon. Leon was a master craftsman and carpenter so in his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, refinishing & collecting antiques. He had a passion for researching Appanoose County Coal Mining and enjoyed classic country music and listening to the Grand Ole Opry. In his younger years he played baseball and then fast pitch softball, well into middle age. Leon was a lifelong St. Louis (now Cardinals) Baseball Fan. Most of all, he enjoyed his time spent with his family and friends out on the farm. Leon spent all but the two years he was stationed in Saipan, on his farm. Survivors include his wife Barbara and three children: David Kauzlarich of Mystic, Mollee Kauzlarich of Moline, Illinois, Lori Kauzlarich of Des Moines, a first cousin Sandra Banks (Gary) of Seymour and cousin Larry Dove of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Thomas Funeral Home with Rev. Kay Singley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior from 9-10 a.m.. Interment will be at a later date in Highland Cemetery in Mystic. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Appanoose County Historical Society & Coal Mining Museum.
