Leo Neubauer's Obituary
Leo Neubauer, 92, of Centerville passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. Leo was born on March 13, 1926 to Leo & Ella (Backaus) Neubauer in Osmond, NE. On January 3, 1951, Leo was united in marriage to Patricia Walz in Indianola, NE. The Neubauer family moved to Centerville after Leo began work on the Rathbun Dam in 1965. Leo served as the superintendent of construction for Van Buskirk Construction Company for the 5 years it took to complete the Rathbun Dam project. Leo continued to work road construction before retiring in 1996. Leo was a WWII Army veteran serving in the Pacific Campaign from 1944-1946. He was deployed to the Philippines to serve in the 38th Infantry Unit named the Avengers of Bataan. While in the Philippines, Leo was awarded a Purple Heart. In retirement, Leo continued his love of listening and dancing to Polka music, woodworking, being a member of the Knights of Columbus, his visits to a casino, and any time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great grand children and friends. Survivors include his wife Patricia of Centerville, six children: Robert Lee Neubauer of Alta, Iowa, Lynda Kauzlarich (Kelly) of Centerville, Susan Beard (Chuck) of Sioux Falls, SD, Mary Jo Allgeier (Sammy) of Pleasant Hill, IA, David Neubauer (Diana) of Ogden, IA, Diane Hayes (Bryan) of Atlantic, IA, 10 grandchildren: Tina Koestner, Chad Koestner (Courtney), Stephanie McDonald (Kris), Kari Houser (Matt), Elizabeth Rudden (Jerimiah), Valarie West (Patrick), Taylor Bliss (Jordan), Shannon Peter (Mike), Alec Hayes, Mary Hayes, nine great grandchildren and numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Roselyn Neubauer, siblings: Leola Botsford, Helen Lindquist, Evelyn Stegleman, Delmar Neubauer and Donna Bell Galvin. Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2018 at St. Mary's Church with Fr. Bill Hubmann officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 5, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 5-7 pm. There will be a Rosary at 7 pm following visitation.
