Larry LaVern Smith's Obituary
Larry LaVern Smith, age 81, of Moravia passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at his home.
Larry was born on January 29, 1941 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Rev H. LaVern and Eunice (Milligan) Smith. On June 14, 1963 Larry married the love of his life, Rose Mary Horn. Together they raised 3 precious children Steve, Sherri and Susanne.
Larry was a survivor of the polio epidemic but never let it hold him back. Larry attended IHCC for computer programming. IHCC hired him before graduation, and he went on to work for them for over 30 years. He also farmed until moving to town in 2006.
Larry had a passion for singing gospel music, singing in trios and with his wife. They sang at revivals every spring and fall. Larry, Rose Mary and Mike Stockton made several cassettes and CDs.
Larry was a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene. He volunteered on the mission field several times. The people of Papua New Guinea hold a very special place in his heart. He was an active member of the Iowa Holiness Assoc Camp board up until his passing.
Larry had many hobbies. Larry loved to have family get-togethers. Whenever you walked into his house, he wanted to feed you. He loved to fish, be it on the ocean or in a farm pond. And he loved a bargain!!! He never passed up bargain buying multiples in case someone needed something.
Larry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rose Mary of Moravia; his children, Steve(Marla) Smith of Moravia, Sherri(Donnie) Parker of Moravia and Susanne (David) Hutt of Centerville; his grandchildren, Kari Smith of Moravia, Bracken (Savannah) Smith of Rathbun, Rachael (Phil) Helmick of Moravia, Roxi (Steven) Leffler of Moravia, Kaylee (Joe) Cloyed of Moravia, Zach (Taylor) Hutt of Bentonville, AR and Zoee Hutt of Centerville; his great grandchildren Shane, Blake, Faith, Landon, Damon, Violet, Kohen and 2 more on the way; two sisters, Lynnette Knight of Moravia and Janet (Warren) Neal of Mount Vernon, OH; 1 brother, Wes (Colleen) Smith of Spearfish, SD; and a sister-in-law, Caye (Rich) Smith of San Diego, CA.
Larry was preceded in death by an infant brother, brother Bruce Smith, granddaughter Taylor Mattly and grandson Zachary Parker.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, October 24, 2022 at The Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia with Rev. Terry Chapman and Rev. Wes Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. Visitation will take place Monday, October 24, 2022 at The Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene in Moravia, with the family greeting friends from 11:00AM-1:00PM.
