Larry Brooks' Obituary
Larry Brooks, age 85 of Moravia, Iowa died Monday April 18, 2011 at Centerville Nursing and Rehab, Centerville, Iowa.
Larry was born September 19, 1925 in rural Appanoose County, northeast of Unionville, Iowa, the son of Willard and Cara (Bailey) Brooks. At the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees in Oakland, California. Larry served his country for three years, including his service in World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Larry operated and co owned the Corner CafAC. in Moravia, Iowa. He worked for Walter's Upholstery in Moravia for several years. Larry worked for the postal service for numerous years, including postal work for both Moravia and Ottumwa Post Offices. He retired from the postal service at the age of 55.
Larry married Margaret Ward on May 17, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Margaret passed away in 1981. He later married Ruby Brooks on February 6, 1982 in Albia, Iowa. Ruby passed away on November 12, 2004.
In his free time, Larry enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren. He also coached little league baseball in Moravia, Iowa for several years.
He was a sixty five year member of the American Legion/VFW. Larry was also an active member of the Moravia Booster Club. He was also a member of the Moravia Ruritans. Larry was very proud of his active service with the Moravia Fall Festival, including his membership on the Moravia Fall Festival Committee.
He is survived by two children, Dan Brooks of Moravia, Iowa and Vanessa (Pat) Nicoletto of Unionville, Iowa; three grandchildren, Paige Nicoletto of Unionville, Iowa, Ryan Nicoletto of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Brad (Jessi) Nicoletto of Moravia, Iowa; two great grandchildren, Cameron and Madison Nicoletto; and a sister, Judy (Ralph) Wallace of Naples, Florida, 2 nieces Linda Peru of Saffron, Arizona and Leslie Thorn of Aurora, Colorado. Larry was preceded in death by his two wives Margaret and Ruby Brooks; his parents; and a twin brother Lonny Brooks on August 23, 2004.
Graveside service with Military Honors will be held Friday 10:30 AM April 22, 2010 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Moravia with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Visitation will held Thursday evening, April 21 from 6-8pm at the Lange Funeral Home, Moravia. A memorial has been established to the Moravia Volunteer Fire Dept or the Senior Citizens Meals, Moravia and may be left or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home, 103 North John St, Moravia, Iowa, 52571.
