Kendell Oden's Obituary
Kendell Oden, age 83 of Exline, Iowa, passed away, Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Kendell was born on September 23, 1932, in Exline Iowa on the family farm, the son of Thomas (Britt) and Cora (Johnson) Oden. He graduated from Centerville High School with the class of 1950. On February 10, 1951, Kendell was united in marriage to Dorothy Stull. From this union, they were blessed with their daughter, Karen.
Kendell was well known throughout the area as a commercial cattle buyer. For many years, he attended several livestock sales a week. He also farmed and raised beef cattle. He formerly owned and operated livestock hauling trucks.
For 143 years and five generations, the Oden name has been prominent in the history of Exline and of Appanoose County. As more and more family farms are being bought out by large corporations, this family is to be congratulated that their farm has been named a century farm. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Dale Cochran presented them with a metal century farm sign and a certificate of recognition at the 1996 Iowa State Fair. They proudly display the sign in the yard at their home.
Kendell loved drinking coffee with his friends at Hardees in Centerville. He also enjoyed visiting with numerous friends at the sale barn. He will be missed by many.
Kendell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his daughter, Karen (Rodger) Maletta of Centerville; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Tim) McGill of Pleasantville, Nathan (Adria) Moore of Waukee, and Amanda Smith of Centervile; four great-grandchildren, Brittan McGill, Alexander "Xander" McGill, Grayson McGill, Kyndall Moore; a step grandchild, McKinlee Maletta; step great-grandchild Gabbie Millard-Davis; sisters, Phyllis Mitchell of Brea, California, Beverly Baldwin of Mystic, Shirley McAnelly of Centerville, and Kay (Don) Hanson of Centerville; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas (Britt) and Cora Oden; siblings, Bob Oden, Wendell Oden, Jack Oden, Donald Oden, John Oden, Britt Junior Oden, Dolores Foster and Dorisdell Germanio.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 10:30AM, at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating.
