Kathryn A. "Kay" Cortesio's Obituary
Kathryn A. 'Kay' Cortesio, age 92, of Centerville, Iowa, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center's - Long Term Care in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Owen and Margaret (White) McConville the oldest of seven children on March 18, 1916 in Centerville. She graduated from the Centerville Community Schools in 1934 and after graduation, was employed by her family's business, The McConville Coal Company in Appanoose County.During World War II, she moved to Washington D.C., where she was employed by the U.S Government at the Pentagon. Following the war, she lived and worked in Des Moines, Iowa until the early 1950's when she returned to Centerville and began a 30 year career with St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital where she retired as head accountant in 1982. It was during her early years at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, where she met her future husband, Frank Cortesio, Jr, when he came to pay a bill after breaking his arm in a baseball game. On August 3, 1954, they were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville.After retiring, she enjoyed traveling with family and friends took up crocheting; inherited her husband's interest in sports, enjoying college football and basketball games and was an avid reader. She enjoyed her family and friends and was particularly proud of her Irish heritage, always happy to have reunions with her siblings, their families and her many cousins. She was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Frank R. Cortesio, Jr. on July 18, 1992; brothers, Donald and Owen McConville;and a sister, Mary Ellen Cox on August 8, 1999.Kay is survived by: her daughter, Ann Young and her husband, Jeff of Centerville, Iowa; grandsons, Tyler Young of Brooklyn, New York and Nicholas Young of Centerville, Iowa; sisters, Margaret 'Muggs' Brunk of Des Moines, Iowa, Rose Stephens and Bette Hiatt both of Centerville, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephewsMass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at 11 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, Iowa with Fr. Michael Volkmer C.PPS officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville.
