Katheryn Campbell-Lay's Obituary
Katheryn Campbell-Lay, age 86, of Centerville, Iowa, died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. She was born the daughter of the Rev. Sidney and Stella (Pickering) Sloan on March 5, 1923 in Unionville, Missouri. She graduated from the Centerville High School in 1941, and later would receive her Masters Degree in education from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, Missouri.On April 26, 1941, Katheryn was united in marriage to James Vincent Campbell in Centerville, Iowa. They were married for over 14 years before Jim's death in 1955. Then in 1962, Katheryn was united in marriage to Donald F. Lay, they were divorced in 1971, however, Katheryn continued to raise the Campbell boys and the Lay girls. She was a Special Education Teacher for the Ottumwa Schools in Ottumwa, Iowa for over 16 years. Katheryn would teach piano lessons in her home for over 30 years and was a member of the Centerville Garden Club. She has been a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa for over 55 years.She is preceded in death by: her parents; 1st husband, James Vincent Campbell in 1955; son, James Richard Campbell on April 10, 2007, and a sister, Maxine Hopkins.Katheryn is survived by: her son, Skip and his wife, Linda Campbell of Centerville, Iowa; her daughters, Donna Foppe of Taylorville, Illinois and Kimberly Jill and her husband, Doug Brandsma of New Braunfels, Texas; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church and can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
