Julia Ann Shirley's Obituary
Julia Shirley went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Julia was born to Gerald & Gayle (Cobert) Hendershot on December 5, 1936 in Red Oak, Iowa. She received her education from Centerville High School, graduating in 1954. Julia would later further her education; graduating from Truman State University in 1972. Julia taught in the Centerville School District for 28 years before retiring in 1998.
Julia was a member of First United Methodist Church and its choir. She was a past president of the Centerville Education Association, a former board member for Appanoose County Conservation, a member of P.E.O. and T.T.T. Julia enjoyed her career as a teacher. She loved watching her students move on and achieve success in their lives. She enjoyed riding her bicycle, playing tennis and traveling. Julia loved flowers of all kinds. She was also a fan of all sports and enjoyed watching sports on television.
Survivors include her husband, Ed, sons: Craig Hartman (Marsha), Dennis Hartman (Sammantha), grandchild: Lydia Fultz (Jordan), great grandchild, Elliott Fultz, siblings: Janet Fisher (Loren), John "Jack" Hendershot (Joann) and Nancy Ryan. She was preceded in death by her son, David Hartman, previous spouse, Gary Hartman and a brother, Gerald "Buddy" Hendershot Jr.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, June 4, 2022 at First United Methodist Church in Centerville. Interment will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will take place Friday, June 3, 2022 from 5-7 pm at First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or Rathbun Area YMCA and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com or facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
