I lost a family member that was also a good friend unexpectedly, Judy Barker Austin. You see we had married and divorced the same man.
I had a daughter, Christi Austin Smith that Judy was a step Mom to, then Judy had Stephen Austin, Jenny Austin Little and Kate Austin Karkow which I loved very much too.
We were the rarity that always got along and stayed friends even after divorce.
So to lose this person, I hurt and cried this morning and I hurt for the children.
But Judy would not want us to cry, she would say get out there and live every day to the fullest.
Judy was very smart, she was a retired college professor, she was a public speaker, a published author all the while raising three kids, she was an excellent southern cook and a University of Alabama graduate and a huge Bama football fan!
But what I admired the most was her optimism! Taking the high road was her mantra. She encouraged students and friends all her life to achieve their goals.
She made friends everywhere she lived and she loved to travel. I remember her calling me one day that Iowa was cold and she was going to the beach by herself to sit in the sun. She asked if she could stop by Tallahassee to see me on the way and I said come on. She spent the night and we had a great visit.
Judy loved life, God and her church, her children, grandsons Austin, Deanie and Cameron and her friends......and we loved her.
Till we meet again.....Roll Tide!
