Joy McKee's Obituary
Joy McKee, 97, of Chariton passed away on March 7, 2018 at Chariton Specialty Care. Joy was born on September 10, 1920 to Charles and Bertha (McVey) Kincaid in Sewal, Iowa. She graduated from Sewal High School in 1938. Joy was united in marriage to Claude "Jack" McKee on December 30, 1939 in Russell, Iowa with friends Raymond and Imogene Levis as attendants. To this union two daughters were born; Karen Kay and Linda Joyce. They celebrated sixty years of marriage in December 1999. They lived near Sewal on a farm until 1945 and then moved to their farm near Russell where the girls started country school. They moved to Chariton in 1951 where they lived until Jack passed away in 2000. Joy then moved to Southgate Apartments until her 90th birthday in 2010. Alzheimer's disease and diabetes made it necessary for her to move to Chariton Specialty Care. Throughout her life she enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She made clothes for her grandchildren, and bedspreads and curtains for their rooms. She also made Linda's high school majorette uniform from black velvet. She loved to babysit when needed with grandchildren. She taught Linda how to cook and make banana bread for Bob. In the fifties when they first moved to Chariton Joy worked at Gross Galesburg as a seamstress putting zippers in jackets. Later she worked at Oppenheimers and D'Allens department stores as a sales assistant until retiring around 1985. Joy loved greeting cards; she always kept the ones she received and put them in scrapbooks. She resided at Chariton Specialty Care for seven years and made several wonderful friends and enjoyed playing bingo twice a week. Joy is survived by her daughter Linda Allen (Bob), grandchildren; Missy Petty (Clarence), Brian Allen (April Leahy), Angela Rosenberger (Dirk), Jack Holder, Lisa Carmona (Gus), 9 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sister in law Dorothy McKee and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, daughter Karen Holder and son-in-law George Holder. Funeral service will be Monday, March 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at Corydon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
