Joseph W. Davis' Obituary
Joseph W. Davis, age 84, of Marshalltown, Iowa and a former Appanoose County Resident, died Thursday, December 18, 2014, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was born the son of Pearl F. and Dorpha Ellen (Gale) Davis on July 19, 1930 in Moulton, Iowa. He graduated from the Moulton Community High School.Joseph served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was awarded a Purple Heart for his Honorable Service. After his discharge, he was a cook for a time with the Veterans Administration; he returned to Centerville and went to work for Union Carbide. After working for Union Carbide, he became a Meat Cutter for the HyVee Food Store in Ames, Iowa. Joseph would later return to Centerville to open Davis Paint on the Centerville Square, which he ran until his health would not permit him to work. He has been a resident at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa for the last ten years.He was married to Melvalene Hess of Moulton, Iowa in April 1955. He was later divorced and married Joan Gerard of Centerville, Iowa and they were later divorced. He was preceded in death by: His parents; brothers, Raymond, James and Francis Davis.Joseph is survived by: his daughters, Sonja Babcock and her husband, Tim, of Ames, Iowa and Peggy Daggett and her husband Bryon, of McCallsburg, Iowa; a sister, Jewell Kirkpatrick of Centerville, Iowa; four grandsons and twelve great grandchildren.Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Cindy Finn officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors by local Veterans at the Oakland Cemetery west of Moulton, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1 pm until 5 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville and the family will be present on Saturday from 10 am until the time of services.
