John "Johnco" Vidmar's Obituary
John "Johnco" Vidmar, 88, of Centerville passed away, Sunday, October 20, 2013 at his home. Johnco was born to Joseph & Katharine (Thomas) Vidmar in Centerville on August 26, 1925. Johnco was drafted at 17 years old and served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. After service he came back to Centerville and received his high school diploma. Through the years Johnco worked construction in the Quad Cities and Des Moines. He spent most of his life working for Laborers International Union of North America, Local #177 in Des Moines until his retirement in 1987. Johnco was a member of St. Mary's Church all of his life and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working with his hands and time spent with his family. He and some of his friends took regular trips to Grand River near Leon and enjoyed night fishing. Of all things Johnco was known for, a few that will stand out the most; he was a common person who enjoyed talking baseball with anyone, especially his beloved Chicago Cubs. He always knew what was going on with the Cubbies. Survivors include; two siblings: Teresa Jackovich of Bettendorf, Iowa, Leonard (Dixie) Vidmar of Urbandale, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Katharine (Thomas) Vidmar, three siblings: William Vidmar, Francis Vidmar and infant brother, Charlie Vidmar. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 24, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Bill Hubmann officiating. Interment will follow immediately in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home. A Rosary will be lead at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday by Fr. Bill Hubmann. Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
