John Stephen Starchevich's Obituary
John "Steve" Starchevich, age 83, of Centerville, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 at his home.
Steve was born on July 11, 1940 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of John and Celia (Risher) Starchevich. He graduated high school from Centerville and went on to attend college for a year. Steve later married Lynn Powers and to that union they welcomed three daughters, Kelly, Stephenie, and Hope.
Steve enjoyed life as a farmer for over 60 years. During those years he drove a semi-hauling coal and grain all over the state. For 25 years Steve was also a bus driver for the Centerville School District. He was known to be firm yet kindhearted, and he was a favorite among the staff and students.
Steve's hobbies included fishing, hunting, bowling, and in his formative years, he enjoyed water skiing and playing slow pitch softball with family and friends. Steve could also be found spending a lot of time at the Appanoose County Fair where he also served as a fair board member. His favorite hobby of all of them was his love of gardening. Many years he would plant approximately 200 tomato plants, rows of sweet corn, potato plants, onions, and so much more produce. Steve had a desire to feed his family and enjoyed donating sweet corn to 4H groups as fundraisers and providing produce to other family members and friends.
Left to honor Steve's memory are his daughters, Kelly (Kirk) Culver; Hope (Tod) Faris; grandchildren, Kord Culver, Keath Culver, Garrett Faris, and Addyson Faris; as well as several extended family and friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, John and Celia Starchevich; his wife, Lynn; and brother, David Starchevich.
Per the family's wishes, cremation has been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 13th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Centerville Faith Church (formerly the Faith United Methodist Church) on Highway 5.
