Joan Sloan's Obituary
Joan Sloan, age 87 of Corydon passed away on February 2, 2021 at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines with her family by her side. Joan was born on March 2, 1933 to Harold and Wilma (Hoover) Bartlett in Garden Grove, Iowa. She had one sister Charlotte. Joan graduated from Humeston High School in 1951. After graduation, Joan went to work at Bankers Life in Des Moines. She married Joe Sloan on December 17, 1952 and to this union five children were born: Linda, David, Laura, Lisa, and Dennis. Joe was a Marine so they traveled to different military bases through his 20 year career in the Marines. They moved to Corydon after his retirement. They later divorced. Joan worked many years at DeFlecta Shield Manufacturing. After it closed, she worked at Breadeaux Pizza and Coastal Mart before retiring. She enjoyed going to the casino, playing games on her tablet, going dancing with friends and family, and listening to Elvis and Alan Jackson. Most of all, she cherished the time she got to spend with her family and watching all of her grandchildren grow up. She also enjoyed the company of Jack Davidson who preceded her in death. Survivors include her children: Linda Rockhold, Laura McMurry, Lisa Hysell (Ron), Dennis Sloan (Edit), grandchildren: Amy Tibai, Ryan Rockhold (Jessica), Lizabeth Randolph (Jason), CJ McMurry (Misty), John Susin, Joey Taylor, Tommy Day, Dalton Sloan, Ashlee Sloan (T.J. Bears), Shanay Sloan, Kurt Sloan (Sarah), Matt Sloan (Lexi), Stephanie Koscso (Safet Pandur), thirty one great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, her sister Charlotte Miller, numerous extended family members and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, son David Sloan, granddaughter Jasmine Johnson, grandson Michael Sloan, granddaughter Shelby Phillips, great grandson Keenan Rockhold, son-in-law Lynn Rockhold, and brother-in-law Alfred Miller. Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 9, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon with CJ McMurry and Paul Niday officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Humeston Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, January 8, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Memorials may be given to Corydon Senior Housing.
