Jimmy Carpenter's Obituary
JIMMY LYNN CARPENTER Jimmy Lynn Carpenter, 76, of Corydon was born January 21, 1936 at home on the family farm in Wayne County to Elmer 'Pete' & Anita 'Nete' (McMurry) Carpenter. After a year and a half battle with cancer, Jim went to meet his Lord and Savior, Monday, December 24th, 2012, at the Wayne County Hospital surrounded by his family. Jim grew up on the farm where he was born. He graduated from Corydon High School in 1954, then attended Iowa State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering through the ROTC program in 1958. In 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Juanita Horner. To this union, five children were born: Sandra Lynne, Brenda Lee, Rebecca Sue, Douglas Jay, and Danny Joe. After college, Jim & Betty briefly lived in Des Moines before returning to southern Iowa to farm on the Guy Buttz farm. Jim and Betty semi-retired to Corydon after thirty-nine years on the farm. Jim was active in farming with his sons until his death. On the farm, Jim proudly raised hogs, cattle, chickens, corn, beans and hay. Jim enjoyed all aspects of farming, especially any technology that improved agriculture and implemented several ideas of his own. He enjoyed working with his family, but also enjoyed many trips to the lake with the family when the work was done for the evening or on the weekend. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Jim and Betty could be seen at any event involving their kids or grandkids. Many times they would attend multiple ballgames, bible school programs, recitals, concerts, or fair shows in a single day. Jim enjoyed watching high school and college sports whether or not any relatives were involved. Jim could also be remembered riding his bicycle about Corydon. Jim and Betty were honored to be selected as the Wayne Community homecoming parade marshals in 2006. Jim's daughter Sandy said regarding his declining health, 'at least we know where he's going.' Jim, Betty, and all five children were members of New Providence Baptist Church in Confidence where Jim served as a deacon. Jim and Betty were very active in their church and placed huge value in their church family. Jim and Betty were also members of the Gideons and wanted to spread the Word of Jesus far and wide. Most of all, Jim lived his life as an example of what a Christian should be. As his nephew Rick Brown said, 'Uncle Jim didn't just talk the talk, he walked the walk', when it came to being a good Christian. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Roy and Wanda Horner, two brothers in-law Fredrick 'Bud' Brown and Franklin Gault, and one sister in-law, Jean Carpenter. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Betty, his children: Sandy (Kenny) Holmes, Brenda (Kevin) Dodson, Becky (Dick) Wittry, Doug (Angie) Carpenter, and Dan (Ashley) Carpenter, his grandchildren: Rachel (Josh) Dodson Weitzel, Chelsey (Ryan) Holmes Markle, Kara (Nick) Dodson Palmer, Samantha (Steve) Holmes Lexa, Allison Wittry and friend Austin Warnke, Tia (Chase) Carpenter McElvain, Brooke Wittry, Shailey Carpenter and friend Cody Campbell, Luke Carpenter, and Claire Carpenter, great grandchildren: Hinley Weitzel, Eperlie Weitzel, Cash McElvain, and Corver Weitzel.
