Jewell Bryant's Obituary
Ella "Jewell" Bryant, 92, of Centerville, passed away on October 25, 2019 at Centerville Long Term Care. Jewell was born on June 22, 1927 in Missouri to George and Isabelle (Aitken) Rodgers. After the family moved to Iowa, Jewell graduated Centerville High School in 1946 and a week later, married Wayne Bryant. The couple were parents to five children. The Bryant family owned a grocery store on the levee and Jewell joined the operation. Later, Jewell managed all phases of the Union Supply Company for Centerville and surrounding towns. During this 18-year career, she was able to work from home which provided her the best of both worlds. Jewell was able to attend all of her children's extracurricular activities. After Jewell closed her marketing business, she was employed at the office of Dr. M.P. Gleason where she assisted with all administrative tasks. After 12 years, Jewell retired in 1986. After her husband's passing in 1993, Jewell found time on her hands and became a food demonstrator for Hy-Vee and Fareway as well as helping out part time at Schmidt Family Funeral Home. Aside from being a devoted and loving wife and mother, Jewell was always a "doer" and a caregiver. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and taking her daily walks. She was a member of Drake Avenue Christian Church, the Research Club, Mercy Auxiliary and volunteered at Centerville Schools reading program. Jewell received the American Legion Citizenship award and in 1998, was BPW's "Woman of the Year." Survivors include her daughters: Carol (Bill) Cortesio, Jerri (Norman) Smith, Becky (Ira) Brown and Mary Jo (Don) Engle; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sister, Patty Gatrel; brother-in-law, Richard (Elizabeth) Bryant and her longtime special friend, Bert Ranes. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayne; son, Roger Bryant; granddaughter, Delisha Marie Engle and twin great grandsons: Richard Wayne and Ryan Andrew Conrad. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville. Interment will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery.
