Jesse E. Phelps' Obituary
Jesse E. Phelps, 90, of Mystic passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. Jesse was born on October 7, 1924 in Mystic, Iowa to Elmer and Icel (Bills) Phelps. He received his education from Mystic High School. Jesse was a member of the United States Army. He was an active member of the Mystic American Legion. Jesse met and married Vera Staley. They loved to camp and fish together all over Iowa. He worked as a coal miner and eventually started his own roofing business, Hyland Roofing. In his spare time Jesse also loved to hunt and watch baseball. Survivors include three sons; Tom McMahon (Betty) of Pleasantville, Larry Phelps of Cedar Rapids, Dickie Dykes of Crossville, Tennessee, numerous grand and great grandchildren, three sisters; Helen Thomas of Centerville, Norma McMahon of Centerville and Barbara (Bob) Steen of Saylorville, two brothers; Norman (Ellen) Phelps of Des Moines and Don (Sharon) Phelps of Centerville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, parents, and four sisters; Ethel Brown, Juanita Thomas, Pauline Thomas and Kate Wilson. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville with Holly Oden officiating. Interment will be in Elgin Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to the family and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
