Jerry Donald Johnson's Obituary
Jerry Donald Johnson, age 76, of Seymour, Iowa, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at his home in Seymour, Iowa. Jerry was born in Seymour, Iowa on January 1, 1929, the youngest of 10 children, to the late Albert Melvin and the late Ida Delphia (Dorsett) Johnson. He passed away peacefully at the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 16 days. Jerry graduated from Seymour Community High School in May of 1947 and immediately joined the ranks in the Army as an MP, serving areas in Alaska, Kentucky, and Washington. He lived his younger years in various areas throughout the country, including Salinas, California and Stewart, Nebraska, but ultimately settling in the county in which he was born, Wayne County, Iowa. He married Martha Marilyn Pettit on September 10, 1950 in Seymour, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Paul, David, Marilyn, Carole, and Mollie.Jerry's early employment included working for Faris Wade delivering ice to many customers around town and working at Wade Standard Station and Hardware in Seymour, Iowa, a business he eventually purchased and operated for many years. He worked for Standard Oil Company delivering fuel and as a school bus driver for Seymour Community School. He also served on the Seymour City Council for several years. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. His favorite pasttime was working jumble puzzles. Favorite family memories include many spur-of-the-moment family vacations, most of which ultimately included routes up and down the coast of California.Preceding Jerry in death were his parents, Albert and Ida; six brothers: Raymond, Harry, Robert, Burrell, Dwight, and Jerald; and two sisters: Viola and Iva.He is survived by: his wife, Martha Johnson, of Seymour, Iowa; children: Jerry Paul Johnson and his wife, Monica, of Des Moines, Iowa; David Johnson and his wife, Deanna, of Seymour, Iowa; Marilyn Boggs and her husband, Alva, of Seymour, Iowa; Carole Maske and her husband, Bill, of Belmond, Iowa; and Mollie Banks and her husband, Sam, of Seymour, Iowa; a sister, Edna McCollough and her family, of Chariton, Iowa; grandchildren Jerry Ray Johnson, Jacqueline Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Jerry Richard Johnson, Dalton Johnson, Delani Johnson, Anthony Boggs, Mary Ann Boggs, Justin Boggs, Abraham and Stephanie Maske, Jeremy and Christine Maske, Robert Maske, Tiffany Maske, Taylor Banks, Tanner Banks, and Trevor Banks; and eight great-grandchildren.Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. at the Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa with Rev. David Welch officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded by the Nye-Birdwell American Legion Post 180. Burial will follow.
