Jennie Matkovich's Obituary
Jennie Matkovich, age 87 of Plano died Saturday morning, March 7, 2009 at Golden Age Care Center, Centerville, Iowa.
She was born in Centerville May 5, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Ann (Vecelli) Angaran. Jennie was raised in Centerville and attended Lincoln School. She was united in marriage to William Edward Matkovich August 30, 1940 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville. Jennie and Bill lived in Rock Island, Il and Rathbun, Iowa before settling permanently on their farm in Plano in 1953. She was a cancer survivor, battling the disease in her 40's. For years she was an avid fund raiser for the American Cancer Society and the March of Dimes. She helped co-found the Happy Go Luckies, 4H Club and Meals on Wheels at the 18-80 Club. Jennie was an avid sports fan. She loved to watch the Iowa Hawkeye Football, Basketball, and Wrestling teams play on television. Jennie also enjoyed listening to her ""cowboy music"" on the radio. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville.
Surviving are three children, Bill (Rita) Matkovich of Centerville, Carol (Brad) Wardlow of Centerville, John (Cathy) Matkovich of Plano, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Billy (Betsy) Matkovich of New York, NY, Marijo (Ben) Allen of Iowa City, Iowa, Andy Matkovich of Chicago, IL, Jenny Matkovich of Iowa City, Iowa, Sean (Deb) Wardlow of Centerville, Chad Wardlow of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kirk Wardlow of Centerville, Wes Matkovich of Plano, Michelle (Brady) Jones of Cibolo, Texas; great grandchildren Deyla and Demeterius Matkovich, Ava Allen, Stephen and Sawyer Wardlow, Jonathon and Michael Matkovich, Tasi and Timothy Jones of Texas; sisters Carolyn Wilkerson of Moline, IL, Angie Tripodi of Chicago Heights, Il, Frances Johnson of Rock Island, IL, Margaret (Kenny) Reboulet of Dayton, Ohio.
Preceded in death by her husband William E. Matkovich, her parents, brother Jack Angaran, sisters Esther Angaran, Marie Koziol, Annie Sovecki.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 11 AM Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Centerville. A Prayer Service will be held 7:30 PM Monday evening at the Lange Funeral Home. Friends may call all day Monday with the family present from 6-8 PM. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Centerville. A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society and may be left at the Lange funeral home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
