James "Crawford" Powell's Obituary
James "Crawford" Powell, age 96, of Centerville, Iowa, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born the son of Earl and Lola (Ransom) Powell on September 23, 1912 near Moulton, Iowa. He graduated from the Moulton Community Schools in 1930.On June 6, 1934, Crawford was united in marriage to Wilma W. Kratzer in Unionville, Missouri. He worked for many years as a manger for Northern Natural Gas Company in Centerville. Crawford was also known as the 'Clock Man'. He had a fondness for all types of timing instruments and would take the time to get the all to work properly. He was a 32nd Degree Mason; a member of Jackson Lodge #42 and the Order of Eastern Star both in Centerville. He was a member of the Centerville Shrine Club as well as the Kaaba Shrine Club in Davenport, Iowa. Crawford also was a member of the National Clock Association and a member of Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville.He is preceded in death by: his wife, Wilma Powell on March 3, 1997; his parents; and brothers, William and Wilbur Powell.Crawford is survived by: his son, James Powell and his wife, Carol of Chandler, Arizona; grandsons, J.C. and Brandon Powell both of Chandler, Arizona.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10 am at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Carl Heien and Ken Merhoff officiating. Burial will follow on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008 form 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm and a Masonic service at 7:30 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to Drake Avenue Christian Church and can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
