James J. Horton's Obituary
James Horton, 87 of Corydon, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa.
James J. Horton was born on January 17, 1935 to George Edward "Ed" and Hazel Gertrude (Wright) Horton in rural Osceola, Iowa. He graduated from Seymour High School with the class of 1953, and then went on to serve in the military. In 1959, James met the love of his life, Patricia Ann Stark of Plano, Iowa, and on March 6, 1960, the couple married. Together, they moved to a farm in Promise City, Iowa and raised hogs, cattle, and crops, and had two children, Tammy and Jimmy. James and Pat lived on their farm until 1986 when they moved to Corydon.
Throughout his lifetime, James worked for Leach Trucking, Rod Ewing Elevator in Clio, and later retired from Voltmaster, where he worked maintenance. He was active in the Promise City Methodist Church, where he attended with his family, and Lions Club. James enjoyed hunting, camping, and playing music with the Country Plowboys and a variety of other bands. After retirement, James and Pat found a love for travel, spending time in Branson, Missouri, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, New Jersey, Staten Island, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Mexico. He enjoyed spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren whenever he got a chance.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Horton, granddaughter, Jessica Ann Horton, and his brother-in-law, Robert Cole. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy Davis (Jamison) of Promise City, son, Jimmy Horton (Laura) of Garden Grove, grandchildren, Dusty Horton (Samantha), Dillon Horton (Meranda), Tamara Davis-Salladay, Evan Davis, Ratha Davis-Thomason, and Ethan Davis, and great-grandchildren, Joslynn Salladay, Joel Salladay, Aleutia Thomason, Cooper Horton, Madison Horton, Harper Dickenson, Briar Horton, and Lewcious Davis, sister, Gilda Cole, and numerous extended family.
Funeral service for James will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 18, 2022 at the Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will directly follow the service at Corydon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 17, 2022 with family present from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
