James Robert Brummit, Jr., passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, surrounded by his family.
Jim (known as Robbie to his family) was born to James R. Brummit, Sr., and Phyllis J. (Buckallew) Brummit on April 25, 1954, in Davenport, Iowa. He grew up in that area until his family moved to Unionville, Missouri, where he started his freshman year in high school, graduating in 1972. While in high school, he met the love of his life, Cynthia J. Lutze. He married his green-eyed girl on May 19, 1974. Jim graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1976, earning his Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then continued his education at the University of Missouri School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1981. He took a position at a clinic in Stronghurst, Illinois, and worked there for two years. While in Illinois, their first son, Josh, was born. In 1983 they moved back to Unionville to be near their family. He opened his own practice and they had 2 more children, Cari and Ben. He continued his practice for over 40 years, retiring in 2023.
He believed in being a part of the community and volunteered in many capacities, including serving on the school board, booster club, and extension council, and coaching little league teams for basketball, softball, and baseball.
He was very involved in his church, where he served as a deacon and elder. He taught many classes, served as treasurer, led songs in worship service, helped with the youth group and made over 40 trips to NYR, where he also served on the board.
When he was young, he enjoyed putting together model cars, bird hunting with his father and playing music with his band. As a young man, he liked golfing, playing volleyball and being involved in his kids' sporting events. He enjoyed reading western novels, singing and playing guitar and playing card games with friends and family. Jim enjoyed watching all of his children's and grandchildren's events and activities. He loved his veterinary practice, being at the farm in God's creation and watching newborn calves in the springtime. He especially loved watching his grandchildren, no matter what the occasion.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy; his children, Josh (Jennifer) Brummit, Shelbyville, MO, Cari (Brad) Gorkowski, Lucerne, MO, and Ben Brummit, Unionville, MO; his mother, Phyllis Brummit, Unionville, MO; his sister, Nancy (Gerald) Owings, Unionville, MO; his grandchildren, Aden (Jessica), Zyan (Alyssa), Nate (Haley), Theron, Boomer, Annabelle, Bennett, Savanna, and Vivian.
