Jack Elgin's Obituary
Jack Elgin, age 82, of Centerville died Wednesday June 1, 2005 at Bozwell Memorial Hospital, Sun City, AZ.
He was born April 16, 1923 in Centerville, the son of Rae Beauseigneur Elgin and John Robert (Bob) Elgin. He graduated from Centerville High School in 1941 and attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1948. World War II interrupted his education. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps in June 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater until May of 1946. After graduation he returned to Centerville to work with his father in Bob Elgins Clothing Store located on the Centerville square and along with his brother Dick, operated the store for several years. He then worked in investments and insurance until retirement. He and Joanne (Jody) Brown were married on June 13, 1949 in Centerville. They had three children, a daughter Jackie Elgin Nagell of Longmont, Colorado, two sons; Mike Elgin of Longmont, Co and John Elgin of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
His mother Rae B. Elgin, father Bob Elgin and a younger brother Dick Elgin preceded him in death. His treasured family will forever miss him. Those who survive include his wife Jody Elgin, daughter Jackie and her husband Dan, sons; Mike and his wife Lora and John and his wife Linda. He is also lovingly survived by grandchildren Jessica Elgin, Nita Baumann and her husband Chris, Josh Elgin and his wife Carolyn, Aaron Nagell and his fiancee Allison Birchler, Dallas Elgin, John D. Elgin, Karyn McNulty and her husband Mike, Maria Hoffman and her husband Mike. Great grandchildren are Ava and Jack Baumann, Maya Nagell, Tyler Elgin, Jordan and Jessica Hartman, Rylan and Marion McNulty and Alexandria Hoffman. He is also survived by one brother, Bob Elgin and wife Jane of Des Moines, Iowa, sister-in-law Rita Elgin of Camp Hill, Pa., brother-in-law J.R. Brown and his wife Alice, fourteen nieces and nephews and their families. Family was very important to Jack who was always pleased to share in their accomplishments and always there to lend an ear or a helping hand in times of need. Those who lucky enough to call him dad, grandpa or simply Jack, will continue to benefit from his wisdom and guidance. Jack will always be remembered for his magnetic smile, quick wit and his great love of sports. He loved pheasant, quail and duck hunting, enjoying the comradaire of his friends, dogs and family in the field. His love of sports was well known. A one time City Tennis champion and an avid golfer, he coached championship Little Leauge and Babe Ruth baseball teams. He and Jody were loyal fans and supporters of the Big Reds and Indian Hills Falcons. Those who knew Jack, knew his opinions on politics and politicians, TV commentators, sports teams from anywhere other than the University of Iowa and Major Leauge Baseball players who played for anyone other than the St. Louis Cardinals. Jack was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church , Knights of Columbus, Elks, Eagles, American Legion, AMVets, VFW, and Appanoose Country Club. Past member of Jaycee's and Chamber of Commerce.
