Irene E. Smothers' Obituary
Services for Irene Smothers, 91, of Cincinnati, Iowa will be Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati. Memorials are requested to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association. Irene Elizabeth Tracy was born May 3, 1923 in Winterset, Iowa to Oliver and Della Tracy. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1941. She married Wayne Smothers in 1942; they were married 44 years when Wayne passed away in 1986. They were blessed with three children: Janice, Gary, and Shirley. Irene worked as a machine operator for Union Carbide for 15 years. After retiring she continued working caring for the elderly. Irene loved playing cards, listening to country music and spending time with her family. Her family will remember her homemade noodles, chocolate cake and the homemade frosting to go with it. She was able to pass down the art of making the noodles, but the frosting has yet to be duplicated. Irene enjoyed her flowers and working in the yard and garden. Wayne and Irene also loved playing music together; she played the piano and he the violin. Her family, friends, and neighbors will all greatly miss her smile and good humor. Irene passed away January 7, 2015 at the Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 91 years. Preceding her in death were her husband, Wayne in 1986; parents: Oliver and Della Tracy; and siblings: Cleo Roy, George Tracy, Raymond Tracy, Edna Crom, Jesse Roy, Faye Acton, and Fern Kirkpatrick. Surviving is her brother, Wallace Tracy; daughter, Janice (Robert) Ray of Unionville, MO and their children: Robert Jr. (Leisa), Roger (Lori), Ryan (Kim), Renee and Christy Allen; son, Gary (Jean) Smothers of Cincinnati and their children: Kris (Paula), Dustin, and Carrie (Tim) Micetich; and Shirley (Ron) Walker of Centerville and her children: Latisha (Chris) Gauthier and Mitchell Milner; 19 great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
