Irene Humphreys' Obituary
Anna Mary Irene Humphreys of Des Moines, Iowa passed away March 2, 2006 in Des Moines at Valley View Village.
Irene was born March 29, 1922 in Putnam County near Mendota, Missouri the daughter of Thomas Guy Humphreys and Liddie Leola (Graves) Humphreys.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Howard Guy Humphreys; two sisters; one brother in infancy; and one sister-in-law Thelma ""Pat"" Humphreys.
Irene is survived by two sisters, Helen (Humphreys, Hatfield) and her husband Art Brock of McAllen, Texas, Shirley (Humphreys, Camden) and husband James Pirillo of Des Moines, Iowa; four nieces, Wendy (Humphreys) and husband Ernie Bisol of Eva Beach, Hawaii, Wanda (Humphreys) and husband James Whaley of Hemet, California, Linda (Hatfield) and husband Gerald Schneider of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Janet (Hatfield) and husband Michael Musgrove of Katy, Texas; three nephews, Howard Guy Jr. and wife Sylvia Humphreys of Eva Beach, Hawaii, Kenneth E. II and Caron Hatfield of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Wesley S. and Tamara Camden of Key West, Florida; a sister-in-law Val Humphreys of Eva Beach, Hawaii; several great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews.
Irene graduated from high school in Livonia, Missouri in 1940. She continued her education receiving a B.S. degree in Education and a master's degree in Elementary Education from Missouri State University at Kirksville, Missouri. Her career in teaching began in the rural schools of Missouri. She later taught in the state of Iowa at Marengo, Bettendorf, and Corydon Schools, and 30 years at Windsor School in Des Moines, Iowa, completing 40 years of teaching.
Irene was a life member of National, State, and local teaching associations. She was also a member of the Daughters of American Revolution, Daughters of Union Veterans Tent 6, the sorority Alpha Delta Kappa, Retired Teachers Association of Des Moines, Iowa, and a member of the Valley View Guild at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa.
Irene had done extensive research on family histories belonging to different genealogical societies. She was a strong believer in her faith of the Bible and its teachings. Irene was a member of Ruth Circle at the First Baptist Church in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, March 6, 2006 at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in the Shoney Cemetery, Omaha, Missouri. Friends may call the funeral home Monday, with a visitation being held from 1-2 PM at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Shoney Cemetery and may be left at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
