Helen Carlson's Obituary
Helen Carlson, 99, of Centerville passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. Helen was born on October 24, 1919 in Centerville to Henning & Augusta (Johnson) Carlson. Helen received her education from Centerville High School graduating in 1937. After graduation, Helen accepted a job at Iowa Southern Utilities and remained with the company until her retirement. Helen was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Centerville. She was also a member of Covenant Women within the church, American Legion Auxiliary and the SE Iowa Art Association. She also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and cats. Helen had the fortune of remaining in her childhood home after the death of her parents making her stay, 99 years under the same roof. Survivors include nieces: Nancy Zessin (Gary) and Carol Shafer (Dave) and five great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Harold Carlson (Doris) and Gerald Carlson (Neva). Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville. Interment will immediately follow at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. Memorials may be given to EveryStep Hospice or Appanoose County Historical Museum and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com or facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
