Hazel Cox's Obituary
Hazel Dean Fortune Cox, age 86, passed on September 4, 2019, in Hospice care at Wayne County Hospital, Corydon Iowa. She was born in Ava, Missouri on May 14, 1933, to Frank James and Ruth Myrtle (Vantrease) Fortune. Hazel had one sister, Betty June Pollock. When Hazel Dean was a young child the Fortune family moved to Cambria, Iowa, there she started kindergarten and attended the Cambria school until graduation. At the age of 17, November 22, 1950, Hazel Dean married her love, Daryl Anderson Cox. The next day Daryl left for Korea and they didn't see each other for a year. When Daryl returned, they started their family having 3 children. Hazel had many jobs over the years but the workplace she loved was Wayne County Hospital. She started as a nurse's aide, then became a surgical technician and finished her career in Medical Records. She worked at Wayne County Hospital for over 30 years. Hazel loved caring for people and cherished the friendships that she made there. Hazel was a member of Cambria Baptist Church and gave her life to Christ at an early age. Hazel, admittedly a little feisty and sassy, was loved by so many and answered to many names. She was called Hazel by many, Hazel Dean by her Cambria family, Dean by her close family. She answered to Honey and Sweetheart, Sis, Aunt, friend, Mom, Mommy and Mama, but the name that made her heart melt was Grandma. She loved her Grandchildren so much and the only thing dearer to her were her great grandchildren. Hazel Dean was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in law, John and Myrtle Cox, her infant granddaughter Chantel Leigh Cox and her beloved little dog, Zoe. Surviving her is her husband of 68 years, Daryl, her children: Rick Cox (Susan Meyers), Nancy (Allan) Jacobsen and Linda (David) Grismore, her grandchildren, Justin Cox, Micah Hager, Deana (Luis) Abarca, Quentin (Lynette) Jacobsen and children, Brooks, Camryn and Strait, Whitney Jacobsen and children, Aryanna, Dayton and Cortlan, Jordan Grismore, Kessa (Curtis) Hoepker and children, Carver and Channing Hook, Jillian, Curissa and Curt Hoepker, her sister, Betty June Pollock and sister-in-law, Nellie Cox, many nieces and nephews, plus a host of other family and friends. Funeral service will be Saturday, September 7, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cambria Baptist Church. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Corydon Cemetery.
