Harold Lee Russell's Obituary
Harold Lee Russell, age 89, of Drakesville, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. A man known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and endless stories from the road, Harold lived a life that covered countless miles but was always rooted in the people and community he loved most.
Harold was born on June 25, 1936, the son of John Elijah Russell and Sarah Blanche (Hemm) Russell. He married the love of his life, Sharon Kay Buchholz, on May 21, 1956, in Leando, Iowa. Together they built a life filled with hard work, laughter, and dedication to family and community.
For 66 years, Harold made his living as an over-the-road truck driver, beginning long before commercial driver's licenses were required at the age of 21. Driving wasn't simply his occupation-it was part of who he was. From behind the wheel of his semi, Harold traveled all 48 continental states as well as Canada and Mexico, collecting stories, friendships, and memories everywhere the highway carried him. He took pride in the profession and in the life he built through determination and perseverance.
Though the open road was his second home, Harold's heart always belonged to Drakesville. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and could often be found enjoying coffee and conversation during social hour at Quick Time and Ray's in Drakesville. Harold believed strongly in supporting local businesses and community events, and he rarely missed an opportunity to lend his encouragement or show up for others. His familiar presence, friendly conversation, and steady support became part of the fabric of the community.
Harold also had a love for auctions, and those who knew him knew he almost never came home empty-handed. Whether it was something useful, something unusual, or simply something that caught his eye, he enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and the stories that often came along with his treasures.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, his hardworking nature, and the countless friendships he formed throughout his life. Harold leaves behind a legacy built not only on miles traveled, but on the people he cared for, the community he supported, and the life he shared with those he loved most.
Those left to honor Harold's memory are his children, Janie Craver, Sharon Roland, John (Vicki) Russell, and Gary Russell; his sister, Barbara Pauls; six grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; as well as several extended family members and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon Russell; his great grandson, Garrett Cox; his son-in-law, Larry Roland; his brother, John Russell; as well as two brothers in infancy.
Per Harold's wishes, cremation has been accorded. A private family burial will be held at Drakesville Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Harold may be written to EveryStep Hospice, and mailed to Thomas Funeral Home, ATTN: Russell Family, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
