Harold Cox's Obituary
Burdett Cox H. Burdett(Jocky) Cox age 90, of Moravia, passed quietly in the the arms of his Savior Wednesday morning August 31, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Burdett was born in Appanoose County in Union Township near Soap Creek on March 16, 1915 the son of Frank and Ida (Stevens) Cox. He attended school at Denny Country School and Hardscratch Country School graduating from the 8th Grade. He married Hazel Harper in Sorgham Valley in Union Township on May 16, 1937.
Burdett worked as a woodsman all of his life. He worked for his father at the Cox Mill when they used to take the mill into the woods spending many days firing the Nichols Shepard steam engine and operating the saw mill.. He also owned and operated a bull dozer for many years.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting for mushrooms and arrowheads, music, horseshoes, hunting and wood chopping and competed as late as age 85. . He was the Iowa State Fair Wood chopping Champion several times throughout the years he also competed in the State championships sponsored by Farm Bureau. Burdett always chopped in his stocking feet to get a better grip. Mr. Cox attended the Church of Nazarene in Moravia. He belonged to the NRA and the Soapcreek Hillbillies and played Stringbean in the Heehaw show in Unionville,Iowa.
He is survived by 2 children; Nyle Cox and his wife Donna of Centerville, IA, Rowena Logan and her husband Jim of Corpus Christi, TX, a daughter-in-law Judy Cox of Moravia, IA, grandchildren; Bryan (Kelli) Cox of Moravia, IA, Marla (Steve) Smith of Moravia, IA, Kevin (Katy) Cox of New Berlin, WI, Amy (Chris) Spencer of Ottumwa, IA, Steven (Melanie) Cox of Lakeway, TX, Brad (Logan) of San Diego, CA, Mitzi (Tom) Stice of Moravia, IA, David (Nolanne) Cox of Pella, IA, Ben (Kristi) Ritter of Centerville, IA, Shannon (John) Wells of Cincinnati, IA; 10 great grand-children; a brother Carl (Katie) Cox of Moravia, IA, and a sister Lucille (Bill) Robinson of Moravia, IA. He was preceded in death by his wife Hazel (Stevens) Cox, his parents, son; Dale Cox, daughter; Ramona Cox, great granddaughter Taylor Mattly, brother; Billy Cox, 4 sisters; Millie Brock, Marie Angel, Alice Kaster and Mary Foster.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday September 4, 2005 at the Nazarene Church in Moravia, Iowa with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Friends may call Saturday with family present from 6-8 PM at the Thomas Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa. Burial will be held at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. A memorial has been established to the family and may be left at or mailed to the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, PO Box 6, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
