Grace Whitehead's Obituary
Grace Maxine Whitehead, 95, of Centerville, passed away on July 15, 2017 at Centerville Specialty Care. Grace was born on December 28, 1921 in Iconium, Iowa to the late Harold and Sybil (Main) Argo. After graduating Moravia High School, Grace attended Simpson College where she received her associate's degree and was able to teach school for a couple of years before focusing on her home and family full time. On July 4, 1943, she was united in marriage to Clarence Whitehead in Iconium. Grace was a long time, active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia, Iowa. She was an organist and pianist at the church for over 40 years. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women and served as a District Officer. She was an active member in the St. Joseph Hospital/Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary and held many offices in the organization. She was a recipient of the Shining Star Award presented by the Iowa Hospital Association for outstanding volunteerism. Grace was an avid gardener and also known for her wonderful candy-making abilities. Grace is survived by her daughter, Sandy (Don) Free of Topeka, Kansas; son, Bob Whitehead of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters: Kristin (Aaron) Downing and Jennifer (Jason) Erkie; great grandchildren: Zane and Taylor Downing and Jordan and Jaxson Erkie, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence; daughter, Jane Ann and her sisters: Eloise Casteel and Virginia DeWitt. Per Grace's request, cremation has been accorded and there will be no services. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in the Iconium Cemetery.
